In 2022, over 350 players represented Cairns across regional and state competition, over 40 coaches and managers were involved in representative teams and over 40 umpires and technical officials from Cairns Hockey officiated in regional, state and national championships.
Cairns Hockey believes the interest in our young people are of paramount importance and Cairns Hockey Board resolved some years ago that all coaches, managers and officials who are involved in the management of representative teams involving junior players are required to hold a Blue Card under the Queensland Working with Children legislation as part of Cairns Hockey’s requirements.

Cairns Hockey has a long and proud history of competing and being very successful across all State Championships throughout its near 90 years of existence. Throughout its history, Cairns is one of the few hockey associations in Queensland to attend each State Champions in age division male and female competitions including the Open Division when available. Cairns Hockey has a traditional, annual inter-city competition with Townsville throughout all grades from Under 11 juniors to Masters across all divisions, both Men and Women. It is played across a weekend, and the venue is alternated annually between Townsville and Cairns. Cairns Hockey is the current holder of the Hawthorn Shield.
The Vidgen Cup (Division 1 Men), Ronda Crossman Shield (Division 1 Ladies) and the Ian Millett Trophy (Masters Men) are all contested on the Hawthorn Shield weekend.
History of Hawthorn Shield
Men’s Hockey representative games against Cairns began in 1933 when Mr Vidgen, a QHA official, was in North Queensland on a business trip, and he donated the Vidgen Cup for an annual competition between Cairns and Townsville. The women were already playing a series of games against Townsville and joined with the Men in 1933. In the 1950’s and 1960’s the teams travelled by train and sometimes in a special “excursion train”. This was quite expensive so the teams were expanded so a greater number could participate and help defray the costs. One year 22 teams travelled with only 9 official games and the rest were social. Former president of Cairns Hockey Association, Wes Hawthorn, donated the HAWTHORN SHIELD and it is presented to the city which accumulates the highest number of points after all games are played.
